I received this TextVook as a free download on Amazon.The probably fictitious Dr. Vook presents Microbiology 101. This is more properly called an outline than a course. Many vague assertions are made as the text name-drops important concepts without even minimal explanation. The worth of the final product is suspect.
Here's an example:
"A virus can damage the lysosome of the cell, resulting in cell lysis."
Nowhere are the terms "lysosome" or "lysis" defined. The "101" implies that this is some sort of an entry-level course. All 101-level courses should at the very least offer definitions of the terms they introduce.
But how much can you fit in 18 pages? Brevity can be a virtue, but the Vook editors have chosen to err on the side of exclusion.
Sometimes the balance comes out a little better than in the lysosome example. That's why I'm awarding two stars rather than one. The level of depth there is still little better than that of the glossary in the back of a real textbook, but here the concepts are laid out in a reasonably logical progression.
